Is Apple Really a Fashion Brand? A Tech Enthusiast's Perspective

Chapter 1: Introduction to Apple's Identity

Recently, I've been pondering the notion that Apple might merely be a fashion brand. As a tech enthusiast who engages with various platforms daily, I felt compelled to share my insights on this matter. It's important to clarify that I don't consider myself a fanboy of any particular brand; rather, I appreciate quality products that enhance my experience.

For context, I primarily use the Google Pixel 7 Pro as my smartphone, the 11-inch iPad Pro as my tablet, and I switch between Windows and Linux regularly. My aim is to remain impartial to all brands and products. So, what do I think about the idea that "Apple is just a fashion company"?

Tech Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

To begin with, I believe technology doesn't have to be overly complex. Many users crave the extensive customization options offered by Android devices, and that's perfectly fine! However, not everyone desires that level of customization. There was a time when I was an avid fan of tweaking my devices, particularly enjoying the limitless options provided by Buzz Launcher on Android. Nowadays, while I still appreciate the ability to customize, my focus has shifted toward practicality rather than aesthetics.

Where Do Apple Devices Fit In?

One aspect I admire about Apple is its commitment to minimalism in design. The company produces exceptionally sleek devices and user interfaces. Although Apple's style may not appeal to everyone, it certainly doesn't undermine its quality. As a Pixel 7 Pro user, one thing I miss from my time with the iPhone is the quality of apps available.

Software and Apps

In my view, apps on iOS and macOS tend to be more visually appealing and operate more smoothly compared to their counterparts on other platforms. That said, this can vary from app to app, as I have encountered some applications that perform better on Android. I appreciate the minimalist approach that app developers adopt for Apple products, which often feels different from Windows and Android applications.

Turning our attention to software on Macs, Apple has long provided a robust suite of applications designed to help users organize their lives and boost productivity. For example, iMovie is a fantastic tool, but there are numerous other visually appealing and highly functional applications, such as the Calendar app. In contrast, Windows Movie Maker has had a questionable reputation for constant crashes, and my experience with its successor, ClipChamp, has not been reassuring.

Moreover, several software vendors focus exclusively on Apple devices, offering remarkable productivity and creative tools that aren't available elsewhere.

Hardware Excellence

Beyond software, Apple's hardware is truly stunning. I still vividly recall my first encounter with a modern, slim iMac at my local PC World store. As someone who has built several custom computers, I was taken aback by its sleek design. Apple accessories, like AirPods, have become iconic for good reason—they not only look great but also deliver impressive sound quality. Personally, I find Apple's wired earbuds to be among my favorites.

I understand that some argue AirPods are merely fashion accessories; however, I view them differently. Their seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem and decent sound quality set them apart. While Apple devices may not rival gaming PCs in performance, they still offer significant capabilities. It's essential to recognize that not everyone seeks a gaming PC.

That said, I do have some reservations regarding hardware. One significant issue is the lack of upgrade options for certain Mac models, as components are often integrated. This trend is not unique to Apple, as many manufacturers, including Dell and Huawei, are adopting similar practices. Society's demand for thinner, lighter, and more portable laptops has led to more manufacturers soldering memory and storage onto motherboards.

Another concern I have is the exorbitant cost of upgrading memory or storage. I've considered replacing my aging custom-built computer with a Mac Mini, but I struggle to justify the additional £200 for extra memory. In contrast, I recently refurbished an old business computer into a Proxmox server for my home lab and acquired a 16GB memory stick for just over £30!

So, Is Apple a Fashion Company?

In summary, I don't perceive Apple as a fashion company. Here's my reasoning: Apple is a colossal corporation that produces a vast array of tech products designed for diverse audiences and industries. Take the new Mac Pro, for example—it's difficult to categorize it as a fashion accessory. Sure, Apple creates some impressive watches that could be considered fashion items, but so do Samsung, Google, Mobvoi, and countless smaller tech companies.

What sets Apple apart is its ability to blend technology with a minimalist aesthetic, and this combination seems to resonate well with consumers. Many other companies are now adopting this strategy as well.
