Chapter 1: The Debate on Email Necessity

Recently, one of my followers commented on the notion that "writing an email is not required." This was in reference to atomic newsletters, which I perceive differently than traditional email correspondence. However, let's set aside the specifics for a moment.

The real question is: If crafting emails isn't essential, why do certain marketers persist in doing so?

My friend Bob, who I often advised while juggling a full-time job, never took my counsel seriously. I repeatedly emphasized, “Build a list!” and followed it up with, “Send emails to that list.” Did he heed my advice? Not at all. Perhaps he doubted my guidance or simply lacked the motivation.

People with stable jobs often feel secure, right? Well, life has a way of changing that. Bob lost his job—not due to any fault of his own, but simply because of challenging economic conditions. Suddenly, he was more inclined to listen. He started building a list and began sending daily emails. Before long, he established a thriving online business.

Then, he received a part-time job offer, allowing him to maintain his online pursuits—at least initially. However, he has since reverted to sporadic email writing, which is about as frequent as rainfall in a desert. Consequently, his online income has also dwindled, leaving him reliant on part-time employment once more.

Thus, the statement that “writing an email is not required” holds some truth, similar to the idea that “earning money online is unnecessary.” Personally, I cherish both pursuits. I find joy in composing emails (typically ranging from 300 to 700 words) and relishing the passive income generated through my blog, affiliate marketing, courses, eBooks, and published works.

Certainly, none of this is mandatory. Yet, I made a commitment in 1995 to never return to a traditional job. I would rather face hardship than abandon my passion for writing emails—up to six each week.
