Striving Beyond Average: Embracing Patience in Growth

Chapter 1: Understanding the Challenge of Average
Navigating any new field can be particularly challenging, especially for beginners who find it tough to reach even an average level of competence. Once they attain that average, they often realize that it can feel demotivating, leading to a sense of stagnation. This phenomenon illustrates why many struggle to find their footing when starting something unfamiliar.
Driven by ambition, I often grapple with my lofty goals. During a period of reflection, where my ambitions felt overwhelming, I devised some insights that inspired this article. By articulating these ideas, I hope to gain a clearer understanding of my journey.
To illustrate my point, I can share my experience in software development, which I began later than most of my peers. The effort it took to reach an average skill level was significant.
At the outset of my journey, I was faced with a mountain of knowledge to acquire, and I struggled with the foundational concepts. Though I could have approached this learning curve more efficiently, my eagerness to absorb everything at once led to a prolonged and challenging process.
Fortunately, I have moved past those early difficulties. I now embrace a more measured and methodical approach to my development. In my culture, we refer to these pivotal moments as ‘crossing the threshold.’
A well-known quote by Bill Gates aptly captures the impatience I often feel: "Most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in ten years." Once I reached a certain competency level, I began to understand the value of incremental progress, akin to compound interest, where small, consistent habits yield substantial results over time.
However, even achieving an average level of skill demands considerable effort. This can lead to the perception that smaller habits are unproductive, creating a desire to pursue more significant accomplishments.
To further clarify this issue, let’s consider those around us who are working to lose weight. Many declare that they will begin a proper diet once they hit a specific weight goal. This mentality holds a certain logic; once a target is reached, maintaining that status can feel more manageable.
I believe this mindset reflects the importance of ‘crossing the threshold’ when initiating small habits. I plan to apply this principle in my own life by selecting an area where I aim to excel. My strategy is to focus solely on achieving an average level in that domain. Once I reach that stage, I can patiently work on maintaining and gradually improving from there. Eventually, I will choose another area to apply the same approach.
