Chapter 1: The Case for Your iPhone
Would you consider carrying an unprotected iPhone?

Currently, my iPhone is encased. It has a screen protector and even a camera shield. Yet, Apple's latest advertisement suggests it may be time to let my iPhone go bare.
Let's delve into the details. Why do cases remain so popular?
Apple has grown increasingly frustrated with the way third-party cases detract from the iPhone's aesthetic. Historically, Apple has had a reputation for producing delicate screens, a lesson many users have learned the hard way.
You might have purchased an iPhone 6, only to drop it and crack the display. The feeling of regret was compounded by not investing in an AppleCare+ plan. After shelling out a couple of hundred dollars for a screen replacement, you might wonder why you bought an iPhone just to end up with a shattered screen like everyone else.
You're not alone; this scenario led to a surge in the use of cases and screen protectors. However, Apple has since invested millions into redesigning its glass technology, introducing Ceramic Shield with the iPhone 12 lineup. But how effective is this Ceramic Shield?
This new glass offers four times better drop protection compared to its predecessors. Apple asserts that Ceramic Shield is more resilient than any other smartphone glass currently available, a claim supported by most drop test analysts.

Ceramic Shield is produced by Corning, a leader in high-impact smartphone glass, which also manufactures Gorilla Glass used in Samsung devices. The impressive toughness of Ceramic Shield arises from ceramic nanocrystals that are embedded into the glass at high temperatures. Additionally, a dual ion exchange process improves the glass's resilience by substituting smaller sodium ions with larger, positively charged potassium ions, resulting in greater stress resistance.
Interestingly, Apple claims its glass surpasses the durability of Samsung's Toughest Gorilla Glass.

However, can we fully trust Apple's assertions? Corning states that Gorilla Glass Victus, rated for two-meter drop protection, is its strongest variant, yet does not directly compare it to Ceramic Shield.
To investigate, I conducted a series of micro-drop tests. Analyzing various drop test videos on YouTube revealed that while Ceramic Shield generally appears to be more resilient, the difference is marginal.
Both materials prove to be quite sturdy, as my analysis indicated:
- Samsung Galaxy S22: approximately 6 ft drop safe
- iPhone 13 Pro Max: approximately 6.3 ft drop safe
The results largely depend on the drop angle and surface type.
Section 1.1: The Weakness Beneath
While Ceramic Shield offers impressive drop and scratch resistance, the iPhone's frame remains vulnerable. Many drop tests indicate that while the glass might survive, the frame can suffer from:
- Dents
- Scratches
- Scrapes
Apple touts its iPhone frames as being constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel. However, this claim can sound more like marketing jargon than fact. Although this steel might be marginally more resilient than standard stainless steel, other materials like Chromium steel or Titanium may offer better durability.
Just as your kitchen's stainless steel pots show signs of wear over time, so do iPhones, which can become scratched with regular use. Unless Apple decides to abandon stainless steel entirely, I’ll continue to keep my Apple silicone case on.
Section 1.2: The Conclusion
Apple has invested significantly to enhance the durability of its iPhone glass, making it tougher and more drop-resistant. Yet, the soft stainless steel frame remains a vulnerability.
So, are you prepared to remove your iPhone case altogether?
