Unlocking the Power of Custom Text on Your iPhone Lock Screen

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction

The importance of having essential contact information visible on your iPhone lock screen cannot be overstated. Personally, I have always included an alternative phone number and my email address on my lock screen. This way, if someone finds my phone, they can easily return it to me.

But why not just rely on Apple's Medical ID feature? While it serves a similar purpose, it requires the finder to navigate through several steps to access your information. Instead, why not make it simple for honest individuals to reach out to you without revealing sensitive details, like your blood type or personal contacts?

Section 1.1: Methods for Adding Text to Your Lock Screen

Over the years, I have experimented with different methods to display my contact info on my lock screen. The first method is quite customizable but may not suit everyone.

Subsection 1.1.1: First Method — Create a Custom Lock Screen Photo

This method is ideal for those who desire complete control over the appearance of their text. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Take a screenshot of your current lock screen.
  2. Import the screenshot into a graphics application.
  3. Mask the part of the image displaying the time.
  4. Add your desired text to the empty space.
  5. Export the image and save it to your camera roll.
  6. Tap the Share button and choose “Use as Wallpaper.”

Section 1.2: Second Method — Utilize a Lock Screen Widget App

The more straightforward option is to use a lock screen widget app. With the arrival of iOS 16 and its charming lock screen widgets, a plethora of third-party apps has emerged in the App Store. Many of these options come with a cost, but a few free ones are available:

  • Lock Screen 16: Offers only a limited number of characters (not very useful).
  • Lock Screen One: This app allows up to 86 characters and is what I currently recommend. I discovered it thanks to its generous developer, Sindre Sorhus.

Keep in mind that with Lock Screen One, the widget text may not update until you force-close the app. I found that it took some time for the app to appear in the widget list.

Chapter 2: Conclusion

As I always say: "Expect the best, prepare for the worst." By expecting that an honest individual will find my phone, I ensure they have a way to contact me. Meanwhile, I am prepared for the worst by having insurance for my iPhone and all my vital data securely backed up in iCloud.

Feel free to personalize your lock screen with contact information or even an inspiring quote, a personal goal, or a crucial reminder.
