# Surprising Changes I Witnessed in My Lifetime

Chapter 1: Unexpected Societal Shifts
Throughout my life, I've observed numerous transformations in society. The journey began subtly with the introduction of microwaves, answering machines, cable television, and fax machines, all of which were seen as revolutionary at the time. However, as we progressed into the age of the internet and virtual technology, it became clear that society was spiraling into unprecedented changes.
Here are some remarkable developments I never anticipated witnessing in my lifetime:
- Legalization of Marijuana: In high school health class, we were taught that marijuana was extremely harmful—equating one joint to the damage of twenty cigarettes. It was drilled into us that using it was not only unhealthy but also illegal, leading to incarceration for possession or sale. Fast forward thirty years, and the narrative has shifted; marijuana use is now widely accepted and legalized.
- Gambling Accessibility: Until I turned ten, gambling was viewed as a clandestine vice. It was considered an addiction that could lead to the loss of everything. Legal gambling was limited to distant places like Las Vegas. Now, nearly everyone has access to casinos within a short drive, and online gambling has made it even more pervasive. What was once a taboo is now just a click away for anyone with a credit card.
- Graphic Media Exposure: In earlier days, news broadcasts maintained a level of decorum, often warning viewers before displaying graphic content. Today, however, it is common to see gruesome images of violence and death without any prior notice or respect for the victims.
- Invasion of Bed Bugs and Other Pests: The phrase "Goodnight, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite" was once merely a light-hearted farewell. Now, bed bugs are a harsh reality, exacerbated by the banning of certain chemicals. Alongside them, we also face the invasion of Stink Bugs and Lantern Bugs—once thought to be fictitious, they are now unwelcome guests in our homes and gardens.
- The COVID-19 Pandemic: While I’m grateful the pandemic didn’t unfold like the scenarios depicted in films like The Omega Man or Outbreak, it was still a significant event. The notion that this is now the "new normal" is far from the future I had envisioned.
- Terrorism and 9/11: The tragic events of September 11, 2001, left a profound impact on many, including myself. Witnessing the aftermath from my home in New Jersey, I was deeply affected by the images replayed on television. This event, much like the COVID-19 crisis, created an undeniable void in our lives.
- Legalization of Gay Marriage: While I hold no judgment, I never expected to see same-sex marriage become legal and widely accepted during my lifetime.
- Lady Gaga's Meat Dress: This iconic moment in pop culture showcased a level of fashion that I never thought I would witness in public.
- Advancements in Telecommunication: The rise of telemedicine, virtual churches, and video calls feels like a scene from The Jetsons. While it's all quite convenient, I find myself wishing for a spaceship to whisk me away.
Chapter 2: The Impact of Change
In the video "6 Things That Will Happen in Your Lifetime," the creator discusses significant societal changes expected in the coming years, echoing many of the transformations I’ve witnessed.
