CEO Satya Nadella believes this could signal a significant shift in how searches are conducted. Rather than simply entering keywords and sifting through results, users will receive tailored responses from the copilot. This system not only provides a list of potential answers but also delivers specific solutions that can be further refined through follow-up questions.

Currently, this copilot is in a testing phase, accessible only by invitation. Microsoft has shared several examples to illustrate its functionality. One such scenario involves planning a dinner party; when prompted for a three-course vegetarian menu, the search engine suggests creamy mushroom soup, pumpkin risotto, and a chocolate cake, allowing users to request recipes or inquire about vegan alternatives for specific ingredients.

With this shift in search methodology, Google’s supremacy is being challenged. When asked about the timeline to potentially overtake Google, Nadella expressed that the present moment is ripe for innovation. This statement reflects Microsoft’s confidence in its potential to usurp its competitor's long-standing position in the search market.

This confidence isn’t without merit. Google recently launched its own chatbot, Bard, but its introduction was marred by errors, including a false claim regarding the James Webb Space Telescope. This blunder led to a notable decline in Google’s stock value, highlighting the challenges inherent in relying on automated information.

The renewed competition between Microsoft and Google will likely accelerate the adoption of this new search model faster than we can fully understand its repercussions. As demonstrated by Bard's misstep, the spread of misinformation is a pressing concern.

In traditional web searches, users are responsible for verifying sources; however, chatbots often project an air of infallibility. If users must constantly validate the information provided, the advantages of using these tools diminish, leading to a potential decline in the relevance of the internet itself.

The implications of this new search paradigm could be extensive. As algorithms like Microsoft's copilot offer definitive answers to users' inquiries, the necessity for individuals to visit independent websites diminishes. For instance, if Bing can provide all the details about a dinner party, users may no longer feel the need to consult recipe sites.

This innovation poses a serious risk to the independent web, which thrives on blogs and niche content sources. Nadella has mentioned the importance of fairness and the need to drive traffic to original content creators. However, as search engines prioritize direct answers, how many users will still navigate to the original sources?

To exemplify this, consider Perplexity.ai, which offers answers accompanied by footnotes. When asked about the governance of the USA, it cites sources such as whitehouse.gov and wikipedia.org. Despite this transparency, it seems only a small fraction of users will take the time to check these original references, opting instead to end their research once they receive a satisfactory response.

Half a billion fewer clicks for Wikipedia

Evidence of this trend is already apparent. For over a decade, Google has been showcasing "Knowledge Panels" that provide concise information for certain queries. According to a 2020 report, these panels, which aggregate data from various sources, have cost Wikipedia approximately 500 million clicks in just six months. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales acknowledged the long-term challenges posed by declining traffic from Google searches.

The situation is further complicated by the lack of visible source attribution in Google's chatbot Bard’s demonstrations. There is a growing concern that tech companies are exploiting web content without compensating the creators, potentially jeopardizing the revenue streams for those who rely on their work for income.

In fact, if these companies utilize third-party content via AI, they should either compensate the original authors or at least provide them with options to restrict the use of their content in such applications.
