Navigating the Life of a Nonprofit Fundraising Consultant
Written on
Chapter 1: The Journey Begins
In an era where consultants often face skepticism, I want to remind everyone that I proudly identify as one.
After spending several years at the helm of nonprofit fundraising teams, I made the bold choice to leave a remarkable organization in October 2019 to establish Altrui Consulting, my consultancy focused on nonprofit fundraising and recruitment. My passion for nonprofit fundraising is profound, especially when it comes to fostering relationships—an essential aspect of the job.
Being a consultant grants me the unique opportunity to engage with various nonprofit missions close to my heart, rather than being confined to just one. My focus is primarily on organizations dedicated to immigration, supporting refugees, aiding unhoused youth, combating domestic violence, and advocating for animal rights.
Consultants come in diverse forms, each bringing their own skills, expertise, and experiences to the table. My achievements in this field are significantly attributed to the generosity and support of those who were already established in consulting when I started.
If you're in search of a consultant, take the time to find someone whose experience and personality align with your organization's needs.
Section 1.1: Expanding Horizons
After dedicating a few years to nurturing donor relationships and fundraising, I ventured into recruitment at the request of a client seeking a new head of fundraising. I made it clear that I wasn't a seasoned recruiter; my background stemmed from hiring individuals for teams I previously led. Initially, I downplayed my hiring experience, considering it merely personal. However, I quickly recognized that this experience held more value than I had given it credit for.
By the conclusion of that hiring process, I decided to incorporate more recruiting into my work while keeping fundraising as my primary focus. A typical day in my consulting role involves juggling both responsibilities.
Today, my day began with writing about fundraising strategies, particularly focusing on a client's monthly donor program. Following that, I had a productive call with a recruiting colleague, which led into a first-round interview for a development director position I'm managing. That went quite well!
Next, I strolled to my favorite coffee shop to engage with others while drafting another fundraising plan and reaching out to candidates for the ongoing search.

Section 1.2: Balancing Communication
I then checked my email, and I want to emphasize that I don't adhere to the habit of constantly monitoring it. I often leave the email tab closed and prefer to check my inbox three times a day, adding a few more sessions during recruiting phases. This strategy gives me ample time to focus on my clients' needs.
Social media also plays a crucial role in my routine. Currently, my favorite platform is Medium, where I share stories and insights about fundraising, including useful tips. I've connected with fellow writers, which has been invaluable as I develop my own writing skills. The community on Medium is incredibly supportive.
Following Medium, my next preferred platform is LinkedIn, often referred to as the business equivalent of Facebook. Although I haven't used Facebook in years, I understand the analogy.
LinkedIn is where I invest most of my social media time, continually building connections with individuals in nonprofit fundraising, copywriting, recruiting, and other relevant fields. This platform thrives on effort; those who actively engage will reap the rewards.
My success on LinkedIn manifests as new connections with potential clients, opportunities to interact with current clients and donors, and a platform to share my experiences with others eager to learn and grow. I also occasionally cross-post my Medium articles and weekly Altrui blog posts there.
Regardless of your consulting role or nonprofit fundraising background, being active on LinkedIn can significantly enhance your work. Active involvement means dedicating time to reach out to new contacts, engaging with posts, and contributing to discussions.
Build your community on LinkedIn; you'll be glad you did.
Chapter 2: Prioritizing Well-Being
A significant portion of my day is dedicated to taking a lunch break and ensuring I get some exercise. A long walk is the minimum I aim for, but I find that hitting the gym is even more beneficial. Exercise not only aids my creative process but also helps clear my mind of distractions.
Self-care is crucial, especially for those of us working independently and not interacting with colleagues as frequently as those in traditional office settings.
The consulting lifestyle and the ability to nurture and grow Altrui Consulting have been a dream come true for me. I eagerly anticipate what tomorrow will bring.
Take risks, serve others, support your peers, and practice kindness.
