Finding Time for Your Singing Practice
Let's face it—carving out time for choir practice in our busy lives can feel nearly impossible. It often seems like there's no spare moment in the day, leaving us exhausted and questioning our commitment to this musical hobby. Many of us grapple with the motivation to learn our songs, despite knowing how uplifting it can be to stay on top of our vocal practice. This article aims to change that.
The Struggle of Juggling Life and Singing
As someone who manages a full-time job, freelance writing, and a family of three nearly grown daughters, along with a husband and responsibilities for elderly relatives, I completely understand how difficult it can be to find time for music. Life can be overwhelming.
Between parenting, loving my spouse, and caring for my parents, I often feel the weight of time slipping away. Nevertheless, I want to share how I manage to squeeze in singing practice despite these challenges.

The Importance of a Routine
I've established a morning routine that includes exercise—whether running, walking, or other workouts—without fail. On occasion, I listen to my choir tracks while exercising, but that's not where I get my focused practice in.
Interestingly, I spend a significant amount of time scrolling through social media, reading articles, and binge-watching shows. According to a 2021 report from Datareportal, the average internet user spends around 145 minutes on social media daily. That’s over seven times what you need for a quick 20-minute singing session!
Despite being a creative spirit who enjoys writing, drawing, and painting, I realize I have ample time to practice. The key is to find it.
Finding Time for Singing
I cherish my choir singing, so I actively seek out moments to practice. I aim to eliminate wasted time and create opportunities for relaxation between my work and family obligations, all while learning new songs for the choirs I lead and participate in.
Currently, I'm working on memorizing seven new songs in the next few weeks, along with maintaining my existing repertoire. It can feel like a job, but I need to ensure it remains enjoyable to avoid burnout.
Five Steps to a Productive Singing Practice
Here’s my approach to effective practice:
Set Aside Time Each Day
Allocate a few minutes daily for practice—any time will do. Personally, I find mornings after exercise ideal. This way, I can sidestep the temptation to procrastinate.
Brew a Cup of Tea
I kick off my practice by making a cup of tea (or your beverage of choice). This ritual follows my post-exercise shower and serves as a perfect time to transition into singing.
Gather Your Materials
I select one piece of music for each session to keep it manageable and prepare all necessary resources, including learning tracks and notes.
Choose a Different Space
To create a focused environment, I practice in a different part of my home—often the kitchen—avoiding areas associated with work or relaxation.
Get to Singing
I dive into my music for the time it takes to enjoy my cup of tea. It’s simple and effective.

The Magic of Tea and Singing
Before I know it, 15-20 minutes have flown by. By dedicating this time, I’ve accomplished more than I ever expected. And it’s not merely 20 minutes—it adds up.
Calculating Your Progress
Twenty minutes a day x seven days equals 140 minutes or 2 hours and 20 minutes of singing practice weekly—significant progress for your choir learning journey!
Imagine adding an afternoon tea session; you could be looking at 4-5 hours of practice a week. This way, you incorporate personal rehearsal time without sacrificing your daily routine.
The cumulative effect of consistent practice is remarkable. I feel more prepared and confident for choir rehearsals, and I encourage you to try this method for yourself.
Taking the Singing with a Cup of Tea Challenge
Now that you know my secret for integrating choir practice into my daily life, it’s your turn! Try the Singing with a Cup of Tea method for a week and see the positive changes.
Remember, it should be enjoyable, not burdensome. Are you ready to embrace this challenge? Share your experiences with me on social media—I’d love to hear how it goes!
