A Knight's Tale: A Reflection on Identity and Purpose

Chapter 1: The Final Confrontation
In a clearing, a defeated dragon lay sprawled on the ground, its tongue lolling out. Smoke curled into the air, mingling with the blood that flowed from its severed tail. The dragon's shattered wing fluttered like a tattered sail in the breeze. The Knight approached the dragon's head, producing a handkerchief to clean the blood from his lance. He gazed up at the dragon's smoldering nostril as its eyelid gradually descended.
"Well, I suppose this is it," he murmured. "What will I do now? It's been just you and me for as long as I can remember. Now that you’re gone, I find myself at a loss. Where do I go from here? I could seek out another dragon, but is that all there is to my life? Endless battles? How many must I conquer before I feel fulfilled? Seven? Seventy? Seven times seventy? Surely, life must offer more than this."
He retrieved the handkerchief from his armor's pocket, wiping the sweat from his brow, leaving a streak of the dragon's green blood across his forehead.
The Princess approached him, brushing away her tears. "Oh, valiant Knight, you did it! You accomplished what no other man could! The King will rejoice, and our marriage will be blessed!"
As the Knight turned, she noticed the green mark on his face. A shudder ran through her; her joy evaporated, replaced by fear. She fled down the hill, through the valley, and back toward the castle walls.
The Knight, cleaning the grime from his shield, caught a glimpse of his reflection. He turned to mount his white steed, but the horse, not recognizing him, bolted away in fright.
He made his way to the dragon's lair and settled onto the cold, damp ground. Removing his armor, he laid down and drifted into sleep. At dawn's first light, a voice echoed from outside the cavern: "I am Sir John Smith of the Round Table! I have been sent by the Lord of the Castle and his fair Princess to challenge you! Prepare to defend yourself, vile serpent!"
Startled, the Knight sprang to his feet, bumping his head against the cave's ceiling, groaning in agony. Smoke and fire erupted from the cave's mouth. As he reached for his armor, he was met with a shocking sight—where his hands once were, there were now scaled paws tipped with sharp claws. He leaped back, landing on his own spiked tail, letting out a scream that ignited flames from his nostrils and mouth. The ground trembled beneath him.
Gazing into the shield once more, he realized he was unrecognizable. A serpent's tongue flicked out as he muttered, "I hardly recognize myself anymore."
