Unlock Your Writing Potential: 15 Essential Tips for Success

Written on

Chapter 1: Transform Your Writing Skills

If you’re crafting educational or non-fiction material, pay close attention.

I never considered myself a "creative individual" or a "gifted writer," yet here I am—spending five years writing online, earning a six-figure income through my words, and guiding newcomers on how to achieve similar success.

Surprisingly, formal education or extensive experience in writing wasn't a prerequisite for my journey. I honed my skills by immersing myself in reading and writing extensively.

However, it took me over two years to discern the distinction between impactful online writing and merely mediocre content. Here are the writing insights I wish I had unearthed and utilized sooner:

  1. Eliminate Excess "Thats"

In most cases, you can omit the word "that" from a sentence without altering its meaning. Occasionally, I retain a "that" if it enhances the flow in my mind, but generally, these are superfluous filler words.

  2. Cut Unnecessary Words

Much like "that," numerous other small words add little value to your writing. Removing them can lead to cleaner and more straightforward prose. As Mark Twain famously suggested, "Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very;' your editor will delete it, and the writing will be just as it should be."

Common filler words to consider removing include: just, only, really, almost, simply, basically, kind of, and very. While I often use them, it’s crucial to deploy them intentionally and assess whether they enhance or merely lengthen your writing.

  1. Respect Your Reader’s Time

Your reader is busy, with numerous tasks vying for their attention. When they choose to read your post, deliver the promised value succinctly. Avoid disappointing them with grand headlines and content that lacks substance.

  2. Keep Details Minimal

One of the hardest lessons I learned was the necessity of brevity in educational writing. Personal anecdotes can be enriching but should be conveyed efficiently.

Many online writers struggle to create engaging content because they fail to share compelling stories concisely. High "Rate of Revelation" means presenting new ideas swiftly, avoiding drawn-out explanations that render your work tedious.

  1. Position Key Words Strategically

This is especially vital for headlines, as we tend to focus on the initial and final words of sentences.

  2. Engage with Concise Sentences

To maintain reader interest, incorporate short, punchy sentences, quotes, or thought-provoking questions. This strategy can effectively disrupt their reading pattern and encourage them to delve deeper into your text.

  3. Use Simple Language

To reach a broader audience, opt for straightforward language unless you’re addressing a niche market that understands specific jargon.

  4. Let Content Determine Length

Sometimes a compelling narrative requires only 500 words; other times, it may necessitate 5,000. Focus on delivering the message rather than adhering to a predetermined word count.

  5. Craft Clear Headlines

Aim for specificity and clarity in your headlines. Generally, being specific generates more curiosity than vagueness. Ensure your content fulfills the expectations set by your title.

  6. Contemplate Your Impact

Ask yourself how your writing can positively influence your reader’s life. While it doesn’t need to be transformative, it should offer new insights or emotions.

  7. Show Empathy

Make your audience feel understood. Share your experiences to connect with them on a personal level, guiding them toward positive change without casting blame.

  8. Have a Clear Objective

Especially for non-listicle pieces, clarify the aim and message before you start writing. Draft a brief outline or keep the title visible to maintain focus throughout the process.

  9. Share Deep Insights

When offering advice, provide substantial evidence, data, and anecdotes. Move beyond personal narratives to build credibility through trusted references.

  10. Encourage Action

Inspire your readers to take action based on your insights. When concluding, give them clear next steps to apply the information shared.

  11. Embrace Imperfection

With the rise of AI writing tools, content creation has become easier. However, genuine connections matter more to readers than perfect prose. Acknowledge your flaws and keep writing—progress is key.
