The Impact of Choral Singing on Mental Health
Engaging in choral singing can significantly enhance our mental wellbeing, strengthen social networks, and contribute positively to our communities.
Every week, the routine of attending choir practice and participating in evensong on Sundays prepares me for the week ahead in the most uplifting way. The tradition of choral evensong is rich with ritual. Although I wouldn't classify myself as religious, I greatly value the comforting structure of the service, the opportunity for introspection it offers, and the predictable sequence of musical segments. In today’s fast-paced world, such moments that encourage us to pause and participate in a shared experience are quite rare.
In the realm of psychology, the term 'flow state' describes a condition where one becomes deeply immersed in an engaging activity, losing track of time and self-awareness. For me, choral singing is a straightforward path to achieving this state of flow. It strikes the perfect balance of challenge, allowing me to fully concentrate on the music and enjoy the experience. Research indicates that this engaging activity significantly contributes to psychological health and overall wellness.
After relocating to London in 2019, I initially knew very few people. Despite this, I never experienced loneliness, largely due to the bonds I formed after joining my evensong choir shortly after my arrival. The small interactions with fellow choir members during rehearsals and at the pub afterwards often evolve into meaningful friendships, all grounded in a mutual love for music. Beyond fostering personal connections, choral singing also helps to fortify community relationships, which can, in turn, drive economic development. A study conducted by Robert Putnam revealed a notable correlation between the number of choral societies in Italian regions and their economic prosperity, suggesting that the social accountability fostered through community singing contributes to this growth.
However, the benefits of group activities extend beyond choral singing. Any collective endeavor that cultivates a shared routine, induces a flow state, and promotes a common objective can yield similar positive effects on mental health. So, whether it’s joining a sports team, participating in an art class, or singing in a choir, engaging in these activities may be one of the best decisions you ever make.
