Transformational Insights from Guiding 500 Leaders in Ayahuasca Retreats

Chapter 1: The Awakening of Leaders

Reflecting on the profound changes witnessed in influential leaders is both humbling and enlightening.

“Don’t inquire what the world needs. Instead, ask what makes you feel alive and pursue that, for the world requires individuals who are fully alive.” — Howard Thurman

Four years ago, we founded 1heart with the mission to uplift the consciousness of impactful leaders. Imagine the ripple effects if those in leadership roles lead lives filled with purpose and integrity.

Over the span of thirteen Journeys, we have guided more than five hundred remarkable individuals through a 1heart Journey. Each Journey gathers over forty high-achieving entrepreneurs, executives, creators, and change-makers for a comprehensive human accelerator designed to enhance their mind, body, and spirit. This transformative experience includes a week-long immersive retreat in Costa Rica, complemented by seven weeks of online preparation and integration. By integrating ancient sacred practices with modern techniques, we foster deep personal growth and alignment with one’s highest self. The outcomes have surpassed our wildest expectations since inception, drawing leaders from over twenty countries and diverse industries, all without advertising. Remarkably, eighty percent of our participants come through referrals from our alumni. The testimonials we've gathered are often so extraordinary they feel almost unbelievable, especially considering the caliber of leaders we host.

As I reflect on the five hundred individuals who embarked on this journey, I feel compelled to share insights that could benefit other leaders who may not yet be ready to join us in Costa Rica. Here are some of my most impactful learnings, carefully selected from countless powerful lessons observed during these Journeys.

Section 1.1: The Challenge of Self-Love

One of the most successful leaders we've hosted once asked, “Can anyone here raise their hand if they know what self-love feels like?” Surprisingly, fewer than a third of the participants raised their hands. His follow-up was eye-opening: “Could someone please explain what that feels like? I truly don’t know.”

This individual, in his fifties and a graduate of both Yale and Harvard, had authored bestselling books and coached top executives for two decades. Yet, he had never experienced self-love.

This theme has emerged repeatedly among high-achieving individuals we encounter. Our drive for performance often masks a deeper need for self-acceptance. We tend to believe that achieving more will finally allow us to appreciate ourselves. This pattern creates a cycle of endless striving, where our self-worth is tied solely to our achievements. Most high-performers focus on future goals rather than celebrating their present accomplishments, leading to a persistent sense of inadequacy.

When leaders struggle with self-love, they often project this onto others, failing to demonstrate how to appreciate oneself and the present moment. Throughout our Journeys, we have witnessed many leaders experience self-love for the first time, creating a ripple effect that extends to those around them. This realization is among the most profound lessons we can share.

Subsection 1.1.1: Embracing Personal Integrity

Section 1.2: The Quest for Authentic Purpose

It is unfortunate that many individuals are not aligned with their true purpose. The concept of “Purpose” is often discussed, yet I believe it is about embracing the ongoing journey of discovering what our soul yearns to pursue. Some days it may involve play or love; other times, it may be about creation and support. The essence remains the same: to flow with what resonates deeply within us.

This realization may sound unconventional for someone with a tech-focused background, but my journey has shifted my perspective. It is absurd to think that we must identify our lifelong ambitions as children, choose a college path at eighteen, and follow in the footsteps of our parents or neighbors.

The root of this issue lies in our conditioning to seek safety, often at the expense of our true desires. Many are now recognizing that the “safe” path can lead to burnout and unhappiness. Living a life disconnected from our soul’s calling results in “dis-ease,” manifesting as stress, anxiety, or physical ailments.

For instance, a Stanford MBA who seemed to embody the ideal life was deeply unhappy. Despite her outward success, she felt lost. During her Journey, she reconnected with her inner artist and began painting again after a decade. Today, she is a celebrated artist, fulfilling her soul's calling while continuing to consult on projects that ignite her passion.

Our purpose is to trust our own intuition and desires rather than conforming to societal expectations. Witnessing the transformations of leaders who align their actions with their true selves is nothing short of magical.

Chapter 2: The Importance of Community

In today’s world, a surprising number of individuals feel isolated, despite the technological advancements meant to connect us. As leaders, we often establish networks and cultures, yet many still yearn for genuine connection.

Authentic relationships require vulnerability, which can be challenging when others expect us to have it all figured out. The reality is that nobody truly has everything together; life is inherently messy and unpredictable.

Many participants in our 1heart Journeys come seeking real community. Often, they realize after the experience how much they craved this type of connection. Unlike casual acquaintances, a community consists of individuals who share a collective purpose, inspiring and supporting one another.

Four years later, all thirteen Journey Tribes remain actively connected, with local groups forming worldwide. The profound bonds created during our retreats often transcend prior relationships, leading to a sense of belonging and support that is transformative.

During each Journey, individuals arrive as strangers but depart feeling closer than many lifelong friends. The love and support cultivated in these connections serve as powerful medicine.

Section 2.1: The Power of Joy and Emotion

Why do we often deny ourselves joy? Many suppress their emotions, which can stem from past traumas. This suppression can manifest in various ways, leading to a disconnection from our true selves.

One Journey participant, a successful entrepreneur, arrived with no recollection of his childhood. Despite his achievements, he faced significant internal barriers. After confronting his past during the retreat, he experienced a breakthrough that allowed him to recover lost memories and unleash a wave of creativity.

Many believe that joy is a childhood emotion we lose as we age, but this is a misconception. The suppression of emotions like joy, sadness, and anger can lead to serious consequences, including illness and addiction.

True transformation comes from embracing our emotions and intuition. When we allow ourselves to feel freely, joy naturally radiates through us.

Section 2.2: The Hidden Fear of Success

The greatest fear for many is not death or failure, but rather success itself. This realization can be challenging to accept. In our work with leaders who have already achieved significant success, the fear of fully embracing their potential often holds them back.

For example, a leader who had built a successful media company felt unfulfilled despite his accomplishments. Through his Journey, he recognized areas where he had played small and began to embrace his true self. This awakening allowed him to help others discover their greatness, leading to a life filled with purpose and connection.

Many leaders feel trapped by external expectations, fearing the responsibility that comes with living authentically. This fear often leads to a victim mindset, where individuals blame external factors for their circumstances rather than recognizing their power to create the lives they desire.

Transformation occurs when we acknowledge our capacity for greatness and take responsibility for our lives. Witnessing individuals of all ages embrace this realization is a beautiful experience.

In conclusion, while the sacred plant medicine we use in our Journeys is not for everyone, it can serve as a powerful catalyst for transformation. The set and setting of the experience are crucial, which is why we invest so much effort into creating a safe and supportive environment.

True change occurs in the integration phase, where participants apply the insights gained during the retreat to their daily lives. The bonds formed within the Tribe provide ongoing support, empowering individuals to live authentically and fully.
