Targett’s lineage was confirmed through mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing. This type of DNA is inherited from mothers to their offspring, ensuring that Targett's mtDNA mirrors that of his mother, her mother, and so forth, all the way back to Cheddar Man’s own mother.

The revelation of Targett's lineage to Cheddar Man was made possible due to advances in DNA technology. Previously, ancestry tracing was limited to a few hundred years, but with the advent of mtDNA testing, we can now trace our lineage back thousands of years.
