TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra Review: Is It Still Worth Your Money?

Written on

Overview of the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra

Having utilized the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra as my primary smartwatch for nearly six months, I feel I have thoroughly assessed its capabilities. My experience included rigorous activities such as office relocations, swimming, and outdoor sports, which put the watch through its paces.

For those who may not be familiar, I previously shared a brief review of this smartwatch on my YouTube channel back in March 2022, where I expressed my enthusiasm for its value based on its features. You can check out that review here:

In this article, I will delve deeper into my ongoing impressions of the watch. To summarize, I still find the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra beneficial and use it daily.

Design and Features

On paper, the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra certainly presents itself as an impressive smartwatch, brimming with useful features including a dual display and various built-in sensors, making it an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts. If you prefer the aesthetics of a traditional watch, you will likely appreciate its design, reminiscent of the Casio G-Shock.

Pros and Cons

It's customary to start a product review by highlighting its strengths and weaknesses. In the case of the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra, I can confidently state that the advantages far outweigh the drawbacks. Mobvoi has indeed crafted a solid product.

Pros:

  • Excellent battery longevity
  • Sturdy design
  • Comfortable fit
  • Responsive performance
  • Dual display functionality
  • Multiple sensors
  • Efficient keyboard
  • Sleep tracking capabilities

Cons:

  • Mobvoi app could use improvements
  • Still operating on WearOS 2.37
  • Menu design could be more intuitive
  • Uncertainty regarding water resistance
  • Notification tone customization is lacking

Everyday Performance

A common oversight in many product reviews is the focus on features rather than everyday usability. I admit, I am sometimes guilty of this myself! However, I can assert that the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra performs exceptionally well in daily scenarios, often forgetting I have it on.

To illustrate how the watch integrates into my routine, let me take you through a typical day with it.

Sleep Tracking

Starting with the previous night, I ensure the watch is charged to at least 25% for effective sleep tracking, which it does remarkably well. I wear the watch to bed, and its comfortable fit allows me to forget it's there. I access my sleep data via the TicSleep app, which is both user-friendly and informative.

Daily Routine

Depending on the watch's battery status upon waking, I usually charge it during my morning routine. My first complaint arises here—not about the watch itself, but the design of the charging connector, which can be easily dislodged without notice.

Activity Tracking

Weather permitting, I enjoy walking to the train station, often activating a walking session to monitor my fitness. The watch excels during outdoor activities, displaying a mini-map of my route. Additionally, the built-in activity app syncs with Strava, although I tend to prefer the native apps for their detail.

Standard Use

Throughout the day, I utilize the watch for messaging and phone calls, finding it convenient for viewing notifications without retrieving my phone. The keyboard is well-designed, allowing for accurate typing and voice input. Mobvoi has significantly improved the keyboard functionality on the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra, a common pitfall in many smartwatches.

Overall Performance and Battery Life

In summary, the watch performs exceptionally well, easily ranking as the best non-Apple smartwatch I've ever owned, with no noticeable lag even under significant use.

Battery life is another crucial factor to consider. I use the dual-display mode, which enhances battery longevity. My typical usage allows the watch to last around three days, which is quite satisfactory. However, battery performance varies based on activities, especially those utilizing GPS and sensors, which can drain the battery quicker.

Swimming with the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra

There has been much debate about the watch's water resistance. Some forums advise against using it in water, while others claim it is suitable for pool swimming, as per Mobvoi's specifications. I decided to test this myself during a visit to the Széchenyi Thermal Baths in Budapest, and the watch functioned perfectly while submerged.

However, I recommend exercising caution when using the watch in water and avoiding fast-moving or salty water.

Final Thoughts: Would I Still Recommend It?

After extensive use of the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra, I can confidently say it offers excellent value. Here are my reasons for endorsing this smartwatch:

Style

I have always been a fan of the Apple Watch but missed the classic round bezel that gives a traditional watch feel. Mobvoi has crafted this watch to resemble a premium traditional timepiece. My only critique is the lack of a rotating bezel, a feature available on the Samsung Galaxy Watch.

Durability

This watch is exceptionally robust, meeting military specification 810G, which means it can withstand tough outdoor conditions. From personal experience, it has performed admirably in various harsh environments without any issues.

The Verdict

I believe the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra is well worth the investment. My only hesitation in purchasing it today would be its current operation on WearOS 2, especially as many devices are transitioning to WearOS 3. Rumors suggest that the upcoming TicWatch Pro 4 may debut with the new operating system, but until more information surfaces, this remains speculative.
