Saltwater Intrusion and Ghost Forests: A Coastal Crisis

Small alterations can result in significant consequences, and an eight-inch rise in sea level along the East Coast of the United States is profoundly affecting coastal cities and woodlands. Although this increase over a span of 70 years might appear minor, the current rate of sea-level rise, approximately 3.4 millimeters annually, compounds these effects over time. The result is a drastic change in the ecology of coastal forests and persistent challenges for nearby communities.

Saltwater intrusion, defined as the incursion of saline water into freshwater aquifers, is becoming a pressing issue. Groundwater consists of moisture found in clay and soil beneath our feet, as well as water trapped in porous rocks like sandstone and limestone. When these aquifers become increasingly saline, the land becomes less hospitable.

Jennifer Jurado, the chief Climate Resilience Officer for Broward County, Florida, highlights the ongoing threat to the greater Miami area. She notes that the encroachment of saltwater is not a distant concern; "As the seas rise, that saltwater front moves farther inland. It is already happening." Communities are now compelled to allocate resources for expensive water treatment facilities to convert saline water into potable supplies, putting financial strain on taxpayers.

Flooding from Various Sources

Residing at sea level heightens one’s vulnerability to tidal fluctuations. Residents of Florida’s coast are well-acquainted with king tides, which occur when the gravitational forces of the sun and moon align, leading to an increase in water levels during high tides by about one foot. This phenomenon contributes to increasing instances of nuisance flooding, where saltwater infiltrates neighborhoods and coastal ecosystems.

With each occurrence of seawater flooding a community, some of that saline water seeps into the ground, resulting in the deterioration of municipal water and sewage pipelines. Increased flooding leads to heightened decay. Key West, for example, gained attention when one of its neighborhoods experienced three continuous months of flooding.

Moreover, the intrusion of seawater isn’t solely a surface phenomenon; it can also penetrate from below. The geology of coastal Florida plays a significant role in this issue, as porous limestone underlies much of the state. This geological continuity extends into the ocean, creating a direct conduit for seawater to infiltrate coastal groundwater aquifers.

Fort Lauderdale faces dire circumstances as the city grapples with sewer issues. In the past year, over 126 million gallons of untreated sewage leaked into local waterways due to the corrosion of sewage pipelines, exacerbated by saltwater intrusion. Fixing the deterioration in Fort Lauderdale will require an estimated $1.4 billion, a sum that the city currently lacks.

Ghost Forests: A Harbinger of Change

Recent reports from NBC News have shed light on the growing phenomenon of ghost forests along the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. Ghost forests refer to expansive areas of white cedar trees that have transitioned from vibrant green to a ghostly white due to salt poisoning from escalating inland flooding linked to storm surges and nuisance high tides.

During flooding events, not all the seawater returns to the ocean; some infiltrates the soil, tainting the inland water table. Trees in these flooded zones exceed their threshold for saltwater exposure, underscoring the increasing frequency and severity of storms and high tide flooding, both of which are direct consequences of climate change.

Coastal woodlands stretching from New Jersey to the Gulf Coast exhibit signs of distress due to saltwater intrusion. The flat topography of these coastal areas means that even minor sea-level increases can significantly affect local ecosystems.

The effects of climate change are often subtle; while hurricane winds and destructive storm surges are conspicuous, the gradual corrosion of infrastructure and the poisoning of coastal ecosystems by saltwater occur more slowly, yet they are equally damaging.
