Understanding Overwhelm in Solopreneurship
Experiencing feelings of overwhelm is more common than you might realize, especially for those running their own businesses. Here’s how to address it.
My fiancée has been operating her solo business for over ten years, while I’m relatively new to the game at about three years. Despite our different stages, we both encounter similar challenges—chief among them, overwhelm.
When responsibilities, opportunities, and work demands come at you rapidly, it can be difficult to manage. With the added complexities of getting our daughter back to school during the pandemic, juggling client projects, and planning our wedding, life can become quite stressful. You might be dealing with similar pressures. Over time, this constant juggling can negatively impact your work quality, personal relationships, and even your health.
However, feeling overwhelmed isn't inherently negative. As solopreneurs and freelancers, it often feels worse when we have no tasks or projects on our plate. After planting the seeds of our efforts, the influx of work, sales, and opportunities can arrive in waves. As creative individuals, we constantly juggle various ideas, projects, and, of course, the unpredictability of life itself.
The issue is less about the overwhelm itself and more about our attitudes towards our work, the way we allocate our energy, and what’s happening behind the scenes. If you're struggling to manage everything, consider these strategies:
1. Scatter the Pieces
In crime dramas, there’s often a scene where the detective spreads out evidence on the floor or arranges it on a board—pictures, articles, and reports all laid out. This method can help free up mental space. By shifting your thoughts from a confined area (your mind) to a more open space (a board or floor), you create room for clarity.
Your short-term memory has its limits, so it’s essential to write everything down, whether in a notebook or a digital app. A more effective approach is to jot down each task on sticky notes and arrange them on a wall. This physical act of getting everything out helps in relieving mental pressure.
2. Connect the Dots
With everything laid out, you can begin to see the bigger picture. This perspective allows you to identify overlaps in your work and reorganize tasks that may be out of order. By making these connections, you can prioritize urgent tasks and let some less critical items slide for now. The challenge lies in the ability to let go of certain responsibilities temporarily to focus on what truly needs your attention.
3. Seek Assistance
Many solopreneurs mistakenly believe they must handle everything independently. In reality, outsourcing or automating certain tasks is a viable option. If you have the resources, consider trading something of value for help or additional time. The key is to overcome the belief that no one else can do the job as well as you can. Once you let go of that mindset and empower others through guidance, you’ll find you can accomplish more by effectively multiplying your efforts.
4. Identify Obstacles
The objective is to facilitate the free flow of ideas and energy. However, there may be significant blocks—similar to the Suez Canal—that hinder this flow, whether they stem from personal relationships, health issues, or other underlying factors. Until you confront these blocks, you will likely continue to experience waves of overwhelm. The more you avoid these issues, the larger they grow, making it increasingly difficult to concentrate.
5. Embrace Uncertainty
How can we prevent ourselves from feeling like failures when we don’t accomplish everything? Why do we feel the need to have everything under control? I often remind my friends that it’s possible to do everything right and still face setbacks. Despite our best efforts, things may go awry. Thus, it’s crucial to work with the energy you possess while striving to cultivate more. It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed at times, as life can be unpredictable.
Start by understanding your situation, and then focus on the one action that will have the most significant impact. Remember, it’s important to be comfortable asking for help and allowing some tasks to wait. By following these steps and taking time to relax and meditate, you’ll find that things will eventually fall into place.
