Navigating Frustration When Life's Demands Change

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Frustration

A question posed to me on Instagram was:

"What should you do when your circumstances change and you can no longer engage in the activities you once did? How can you cope with that frustration?"

In my view, frustration often arises when we resist accepting our current reality or when our desires clash with what is achievable. The initial step is to embrace your situation as it stands. Perhaps your life has shifted, and you find yourself with less time, financial resources, or energy than before.

This scenario is common for individuals who lead busy lives; we attempt to maintain our prior pace and eventually realize it’s no longer feasible. This can occur while trying to balance work with parenting at home or when facing unexpected health issues or emotional challenges. In such cases, it is crucial to seek professional help, such as consulting a psychologist.

There's a tendency to push through these challenges, convinced that since you’ve managed everything in the past, you can conquer this too. However, this often leads to feelings of frustration, irritability, and tension, which can spill over into all facets of your life.

So, what can be done about this predicament?

One method that has proven effective for me, albeit seemingly straightforward, is to accept the present circumstances. Although it may be difficult, here’s my thought process during those times: "I can’t maintain my previous routine under these conditions. This approach isn’t working for me." The reality is that I have limited hours available for work each day.

Section 1.1: Real-Life Examples

Let me share a couple of real-life scenarios:

When I relocated back to Spain from Canada, I was eager to launch my online business in Spanish right away. However, upon arrival, we lacked basic necessities like housing, internet access, and a school for my son. My unfamiliarity with the city made it hard to concentrate on my business.

I managed to work a little each day, but my focus was divided due to pressing priorities. Initially, I felt frustrated, but I decided to communicate honestly with my mentor about my situation. I explained that I couldn’t proceed at that time and needed a few months to settle my life before diving back into my business.

It wasn’t an excuse; it was simply the truth of my circumstances. After taking the necessary break to get organized, I returned with renewed commitment.

Subsection 1.1.1: A Client's Journey

Another example involves a client who wanted to elevate her business but faced the tragic loss of a close family member. This loss led her to question her commitment to her business. The reality was that she hadn’t allowed herself to grieve properly.

After discussing her situation, she took a few months off to heal, returning with fresh motivation and clarity about her entrepreneurial aspirations.

Sometimes, a pause is essential for future progress. You must grant yourself permission to take a break when necessary. It’s important to discern between an excuse and a legitimate reason for stepping back. Slowing down isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s often the wisest choice.

Section 1.2: Reassessing Responsibilities

When you have dependents, it’s crucial to evaluate the time and energy you can allocate. If you’re unable to maintain your previous workload, it’s necessary to set new priorities, delegate tasks, and eliminate non-essential commitments.

You may need to adjust your schedule, working at unconventional hours or taking on fewer clients, as I did during my children’s early years.

In addition to accepting your current reality and determining what adjustments are needed to regain a sense of peace and motivation, it’s vital to clarify your priorities and understand what truly matters in your life at this moment.

There will be times when financial demands require increased busyness, while other periods may necessitate stepping back, even if it means reduced income. Sometimes, you may want to handle multiple responsibilities, acknowledging that you can’t give 100% to everything, yet you feel fulfilled by being involved in all areas of your life.

Chapter 2: Reflecting on Your Situation

Take a moment to assess your current reality—not what you wish it to be or what it once was, but what it is now.
