In my journey through life, I often find myself making mistakes. I overcommit, I get overwhelmed, I say things I shouldn't, and occasionally, I hurt those around me, including myself. My girlfriend affectionately refers to these missteps as my "blunders."

Despite being prone to errors, one area where I excel is in maintaining my health. For the past three years, I have consistently engaged in daily reading and writing, participated in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training 5–7 times a week, and lifted weights 2–3 times weekly. These practices are not mere habits; they form a routine that defines who I am. This routine has been life-changing, but its effectiveness stems from my unwavering commitment to these habits over the years.

Here are the core principles that enable me to stay fit and healthy, no matter where I find myself in the world.

Section 1.1: Never Skip a Workout

The physical aspect of my life is crucial for my overall growth. Skipping workouts leaves me feeling sluggish mentally and physically drained. When I miss a training session, I find it easier to procrastinate on essential tasks. Dedicating time to exercise creates a sense of urgency, driving me to take action.

When time is limited and tasks are abundant, a rational mind prioritizes and begins working. Fortunately, I have fewer distractions, which allows me to focus on honing my skills and pursuing my goals. Therefore, it is vital to maintain practice sessions, even while traveling or feeling overwhelmed.

Section 1.2: Set Clear Daily Goals

While I enjoy using workouts as a foundation for productivity, I’ve learned that progress in physical fitness does not necessarily equate to growth in intellectual pursuits. Excessive training can lead to fatigue, impairing my ability to absorb information or write effectively.

Balancing my activities is essential; some days are dedicated to rigorous training, while others focus more on lighter workouts or writing. I still engage in both every day, but the intensity of each varies. On days with significant writing deadlines or before a BJJ match, I dedicate more time to writing, sometimes producing up to five articles in a day. Conversely, on days focused on training, I might only write a brief piece and engage in several training sessions. This awareness of daily demands allows me to maintain my routine regardless of my location, preventing burnout and keeping my work fresh and engaging.

Subsection 1.2.1: Importance of Sleep and Recovery

I prioritize sleep as a fundamental component of my mental well-being. Lack of sleep leads to increased anxiety, feelings of depression, burnout, and irritability. When I ensure adequate rest and recovery, my overall life improves significantly.

While traveling, the importance of sleep escalates. After a long travel day, I recognize the need for either a good night’s sleep or a day dedicated to rest, or sometimes both. Understanding my body’s needs for recovery allows me to create an illusion of stability despite constant travel fatigue.

Chapter 2: Cultivating Motivation

My life is filled with support from family, friends, and a loving partner, and I am fortunate to engage in work I am passionate about. However, I understand that this sense of fulfillment is transient. Each achievement presents new challenges and goals.

The progress I’ve made serves as a powerful motivator to continue pursuing my objectives, irrespective of external circumstances. When you feel fulfilled, tasks become necessary steps toward a greater purpose rather than mere habits for self-improvement. Improvement transforms into an obligation rather than an option.

Aim to construct a life where you are compelled to thrive. Be courageous.

Closing Thoughts

This year, I have been on 16 trips and have plans for nearly every weekend until late fall. I will be settling into a new apartment in Austin, yet my travel schedule will remain busy. The demands of my profession require constant travel for teaching, competing, and connecting with loved ones. As long as I maintain this lifestyle, I must rise to the occasion.

If you aspire to reach your full potential, learning to travel without compromising your performance is crucial. Mastery lies in your ability to excel regardless of circumstances.
