Finding True Fulfillment Beyond Extreme Success

Written on

Chapter 1: The Misconception of Success

In a recent reflection, I discussed the importance of not settling for mediocrity. The narrative that we don't aspire to succeed is often just a way to cope with our reluctance to take the necessary actions to achieve our goals. This message resonates with many, including myself, particularly regarding my writing endeavors on Medium.

However, the pursuit of extreme success isn’t essential in every aspect of life. It’s possible that what we genuinely seek is something different, and the notion of extreme success is merely a vehicle to attain those desires.

What could these deeper desires be? They may include happiness, fulfillment, social recognition, or inner peace.

To uncover what we truly want, we must engage in self-inquiry:

"Why do I have this intense desire for success?"

Have A Conversation with Yourself

Pose this question to yourself and allow your thoughts to guide you to the conclusion that reveals whether your desire for extreme success is genuine or if it stems from a pursuit of something else.

I found myself pondering this question:

Why am I striving to be in the top 1% of my undergraduate program?

Is it merely for high grades?

And why do I care about that?

Ah, so I can secure a position with a reputable employer!

But why is that vital?

So I can find fulfillment in my career and contribute positively to the world.

Is that the only route to fulfillment and making a difference? David, aren't you already experiencing some of that by writing on Medium?

Indeed, you make a valid point. The pursuit of extreme success in academia and employment is just one pathway to achieve what I truly desire.

Extreme Success Can Be Exhausting

It's a well-known fact that aiming for extreme success—being among the top tier in your field—can be incredibly draining. It demands substantial effort, resilience, and determination.

I’m not suggesting you avoid stepping outside your comfort zone and pushing yourself. However, it's crucial to avoid putting all your resources into a singular pursuit only to discover that it wasn’t what you genuinely wanted in the first place.

Just like going to a farmer's market and realizing you actually preferred a leisurely stroll rather than buying a basket of eggs, the same principle applies here.

Avoid chasing extreme success at the expense of your well-being if what you truly wanted could be achieved through less strenuous methods. For me, I’ve recognized the need to distribute my energy more wisely. I shouldn't wear myself out chasing a goal (like fulfillment and making a difference) that I could start achieving now by dedicating more time to my writing on Medium!

Be Honest with Yourself

Pursue extreme success if it aligns with your true desires, but often, we seek something else closely tied to that notion.

So, ask yourself:

Do you genuinely want to be extremely successful?

Or are you after the feelings, recognition, or status that often accompany it?

Good luck on your journey!
