Finding Peace in Prayer: Embracing the Unexpected Responses
Written on
Chapter 1: The Universal Nature of Prayer
In various situations, people turn to Higher Powers for support. Students often pray before an important exam, fans seek divine intervention during a crucial kick, and basketball players whisper prayers at the foul line prior to a free throw. In moments of distress, individuals reach out to their respective Higher Powers, frequently negotiating for assistance in exchange for personal changes.
A notable beer commercial from 1982 featured a dramatic bowling moment where two celebrity teams were tied, and one bowler needed just one pin to secure victory. The memorable line from that ad, "All we need is one pin, Rodney!"—spoken by Ben Davidson, underscores the tension of the moment.
Reflecting on this, I recall a time my wife and I participated in a national student leadership training event. An enduring tradition during the three-week summer conference was a bowling night. The staff competed against student teams, and my performance that evening was far from stellar.
Your chances of scoring a strike diminish significantly if you fail to hit the headpin!
Despite my friend's prayers, my bowling was dismal! I felt like Rodney Dangerfield in that commercial, as my ball veered off course, landing in the gutter with zero pins to show for my efforts. The lane felt impossibly narrow, while the gutters seemed to stretch endlessly.
To my embarrassment, at least one student team triumphed over us that night, and they didn't hesitate to tease us throughout the conference, which was well-deserved given our pre-bowling smack talk.
Section 1.1: The Power of Prayer
It's essential to remember that we can always communicate with our Higher Power, which for me is the Almighty God as depicted in the Holy Bible. The scripture reassures us that God listens to our prayers:
"The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers." — 1 Peter 3:12a NLT
God's responses to our prayers can typically be categorized into three answers: Yes, No, or Wait.
Subsection 1.1.1: Accepting God's Answers
My friend and I prayed for improvement in my bowling skills, but the response was a disappointing “No.” Accepting this was challenging, especially after our earlier bravado in front of a group of teenagers, who now had ample ammunition to tease us.
Note: I don't genuinely believe that God was preventing me from bowling well. Rather, I think He allowed me to grapple with my own human shortcomings and inept mechanics. If anything, He might have been nudging me towards humility regarding my pre-bowling trash talk.
Section 1.2: The Challenge of Waiting
While we relish the times God answers with a "Yes," it can be disheartening when we find ourselves in silence, often interpreted as a "Wait." Humanity's impatience makes waiting for answers particularly tough. We pour our hearts into our prayers, yearning for something, only to be met with silence.
We delight in affirmative answers, yet “Wait” and “No” can be much harder to accept. God is not a cosmic genie fulfilling our every whim; rather, He is a loving presence, aiming to cultivate growth through our experiences.
Chapter 2: Lessons Learned from Prayer
The first video, You Can Pray Anywhere, discusses the versatility of prayer and how it can be a source of comfort no matter the setting.
The second video, I Can Pray Anywhere, Anytime! (Prayer & Worship), emphasizes the omnipresence of prayer in our lives, encouraging viewers to engage in worship and communication with their Higher Power at any moment.
Ultimately, reflecting on my bowling experience serves as a reminder that prayer is always available to us, regardless of our circumstances. We must be cautious about what we wish for, as sometimes we might receive lessons instead of immediate answers.
