Finding Balance: The Importance of Disconnecting from Daily Life

Written on

Understanding Our Need to Disconnect

Recently, I engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue with my alter ego, whom I refer to as Supremo. This conversation shed light on the necessity of allowing ourselves to take a break from the daily hustle.

"I asked my alter ego a question that many of us might relate to: Why do we hesitate to announce our free time to others?"

Supremo replied candidly, "I fear that if I declare my free time, it might invite others to give me tasks. I’d end up occupied with their priorities rather than my own."

"What do you occupy yourself with during your downtime?" I inquired.

His response was revealing: "I tend to keep busy with online shopping, scrolling through social media, checking messages, and browsing through various content."

"So, you're not genuinely busy; you’re merely filling time with distractions to avoid confronting real responsibilities?" I pointed out.

"Uh, I guess so," he admitted.

"Why not embrace some downtime and do absolutely nothing? Just relax and enjoy your own space," I suggested.

"But that idea frightens me!" he confessed.

"Why is that?" I pressed.

Supremo explained, "I fear that I would begin to reflect on my life, which could lead to an overwhelming cycle of self-critique and anxiety."

"That's quite a realization. I genuinely feel for you," I said.

When Do You Unplug?

Now, I pose a question to you, dear friends: When was the last time you enjoyed a vacation without any connectivity? Can you recall the last movie you watched in a theater without being compelled to check your phone? Do you find yourself reaching for your phone as soon as your flight touches down?

How often do you, like Supremo, pretend to be busy while really just passing time? We often crave validation and fear missing out, leading us to believe we’re indispensable to the world.

In reality, nothing halts when we take a step back. The world continues to turn, and we are not the sole caretakers of its progress.

It's crucial to recognize that we need breaks from this incessant need to stay connected. Taking time for ourselves can reveal that many of our personal goals suffer because we are too preoccupied with external distractions.

This reluctance to acknowledge our free time can lead to unnecessary stress and, ultimately, a forced break, possibly for health reasons.

Taking Time for Reflection

Managing your leisure time can be challenging but is immensely rewarding for both you and those around you. Consider how children perceive their time: they seem constantly engaged, yet they experience freedom in learning and play.

This 'freedom' is essential for mental growth, contrasting sharply with our often overly structured lives. We all deserve periods of true relaxation; they enable us to achieve more by doing less.

Close your browser tabs, turn off your phone for an hour, disconnect your internet, or designate a "no-TV" Sunday each month. Try being offline and engage in introspective conversations with your alter ego, just as I did.

It transformed my perspective on life!
