The Essential Work of Healing: No External Fixes Here

Written on

Understanding the Necessity of Personal Healing

There’s a critical truth that deserves emphasis: no achievement or external victory can replace the essential work of self-improvement. Regardless of the external challenges or injustices we face, the need for personal healing remains constant.

This brings to mind a humorous observation I often share: I’ve decided against dating revolutionary-minded individuals because many attribute all their struggles to capitalism. Like most humor, there's a kernel of truth here. Particularly among activists and community leaders, there's a noticeable tendency to point fingers at systemic issues such as capitalism, colonialism, and racism for their woes.

Once these issues are acknowledged, a misguided belief can emerge that removing these oppressive systems will eliminate our suffering. This viewpoint overlooks a crucial reality: while we didn’t initiate these systems, we continue to perpetuate our own suffering through our actions and beliefs.

This mindset resembles a form of spiritual bypassing. It neglects two key aspects: firstly, even though we didn’t ignite the flames of oppression, we play a role in keeping them alive through our choices and learned behaviors. We didn’t create the structures that limit us, but we’ve been shaped by them, and to dismantle their influence, we must consciously work on transforming our own mindsets.

Secondly, it’s vital to recognize that our experiences are always filtered through our individual perceptions. These perceptions are influenced by our emotions, beliefs, desires, fears, and values. We are actively involved in our experiences; we can choose how to interpret them, even if our choices are only apparent in hindsight.

This isn’t to suggest that the adversity we face is our fault. On the contrary, we often encounter events outside our control—many of which are profoundly unjust and have left lasting scars. Acknowledging our innocence does not diminish our capacity for agency.

The harmful systems we seek to dismantle originate from collective human behaviors—not from individual actions. They emerge from innate human tendencies: to dominate through fear, to impose order for safety, to eliminate perceived problems, and to enforce conformity.

These impulses are inherently human and understandable, yet they are also the very tendencies that sustain the systems we wish to change. To effectively challenge these systems, we must delve into, comprehend, heal, and transform the underlying impulses that gave rise to them.

As my friend Jamie wisely noted, even in an ideal world free from capitalism and hierarchies, life’s challenges will persist. Illness and loss will still occur. Conflicts will arise among families and friends, and emotional pain will remain. While toxic systems can exacerbate these struggles, their removal won’t eliminate the pain or the need for healing.

If you aspire to genuine happiness, healthy relationships, conscious choices, emotional and physical well-being, and a fulfilling life beyond mere survival, you must commit to the work of healing. There’s no shortcut.

This involves a candid examination of your actions, showing compassion to yourself and others, practicing empathy, confronting your trauma, and unraveling the habitual responses it triggers. You must work on shifting your perceptions and beliefs, resolving conflicts, and seeking assistance when necessary.

While you may not have caused your pain, you are the only one capable of healing yourself.

Engaging in personal healing is what empowers us to forge new systems and initiate transformative patterns of thought and behavior. Even in a world devoid of capitalism or climate crises, the imperative to learn healing remains. Blaming external factors—regardless of their culpability in our suffering—will not alter the fundamental truth: the work of healing is essential.
