Change: Embracing Transformation in Life's Journey

Understanding the Nature of Change

Recently, while spending time with my cousins, I noticed one of them sporting green contact lenses, which made her seem like a completely different person. I commented, “You’ve changed so much!” and immediately sensed her discomfort. My aunt explained that my cousin has a strong aversion to the term "change." This moment made me reflect on the deeper implications of change, prompting me to pen this piece.

In my view, change itself isn’t inherently positive or negative; what matters is the direction of that change. My cousin's unease likely stemmed from her belief that change means “moving from bad to good.” She even asked, “Was I unattractive before?” Of course, that wasn’t true. Typically, when people discuss change, they think of two scenarios: transitioning “from good to bad” or “from bad to good.” However, the truth is far more intricate.

Types of Change: A Broader Perspective

While many are familiar with the shifts between good and bad, change can also manifest in subtler forms. Changes can occur “from good to better” or “from bad to worse.” Additionally, there are changes such as death, which defy simplistic categorization. When we examine these various types of change, we begin to understand that what we label as change is, in fact, a multifaceted phenomenon.

How Do Changes Occur?

Let’s delve into the concepts of “good to better” and “bad to worse.” For instance, after my cousin donned the lenses, she had indeed changed. She was beautiful before, and she remains beautiful now. This transformation can be viewed as “from good to better.” The metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly illustrates this perfectly; both the caterpillar and the butterfly hold their own beauty. Perceptions of beauty or ugliness are subjective. It’s possible that many changes we perceive as “from bad to good” may actually represent shifts “from good to better.”

On the flip side, consider the scenario of a “bad to worse” change. A person may have negative traits but remain unnoticed due to their quiet demeanor. However, once they attain power, their malevolent behavior becomes apparent. In this case, the individual has transitioned “from bad to worse.”

The Story of Perspective on Change

There’s a poignant tale that relates to this discussion. A man, informed of his impending death, sees his sons weeping by his bedside. He reassures them, saying, “Do not cry; there is something worse than the worst.” The sons are puzzled and question, “Father, what could be worse? You are dying!” That week, a devastating plague strikes, and they lose all their children. They later seek forgiveness from their father, but it’s too late.

The Dangers of Decay

Another important concept is that of “decay,” which I believe embodies the most detrimental form of change. It begins in the mind and eventually manifests in behavior and appearance. This change is the hardest to detect and the most destructive. Decay often occurs in those who resist change. Regrettably, this path is one many unknowingly tread. Individuals who reject renewal become burdensome to themselves and those around them. Much like a tree rotting from within, they may seem solid externally, yet they are hollowed out and on the verge of collapse.

Embracing Change as a Journey

Change is a journey, and its destination is determined by our choices. I encourage everyone to view change as a positive force and embark on your own journey of transformation. While change is unavoidable, it is within our power to embrace it and steer its course.

After my conversation with my cousin, I gained a clearer understanding: change is not merely a journey from bad to good or good to bad; it is an ever-present dynamic in every facet of our lives. Change signifies not just a beginning or an end; it embodies life itself. Thus, rather than perceiving change as a threat, we should learn to dance with it. By understanding and internalizing change, we can lead more meaningful and fulfilling lives. May you all discover the beauty in change and continue your journeys with joy and tranquility.
