Embracing Minimalism: A Journey to Spiritual Clarity

Written on

Chapter 1: Reflecting on Abundance and Scarcity

As the year draws to a close, it's a fitting time to assess what we possess and what we lack. A wise writer once remarked that exhausting oneself for minimal returns—be it in terms of joy, health, wealth, or happiness—seems futile. This year, I am committed to paring down my existence in every aspect.

Just as film budgets can be trimmed, so too can our lives thrive with less. The notion of simplifying has been humorously articulated by George Carlin, who crafted an entire routine around this theme. The transition from a consumer-centric lifestyle to one of creation has already been made; I even shut down a fashion business rooted in materialism.

However, living a conscious life of simplicity extends beyond mere possessions. It encompasses the people and elements that surround us, all of which can sap our energy and tranquility. After spending a decade in Los Angeles, I found myself subsisting on mere scraps after enjoying a comfortable salary and benefits from my shop.

Those in power, if not properly challenged, often want to see others struggling. This tendency may stem from tradition; perhaps they, too, once experienced hardship under a different authority and now feel entitled to exert control over their domain—some with harshness, others as if molding a new entity, eager to leave their mark.

My own father embodied the latter approach. He took me out to a secluded country road, stopped the car, and insisted I take the wheel at just 14 years old. He was eager to impart his wisdom before anyone else could influence me. He served as a nurturing guide, though he could be stern if mistakes were made.

This is sacred ground, deserving of respect for those who have come before us. Like our tribal elders, some are more nurturing, such as my fondly remembered Aunt Noni—a retired teacher who lived well into her 90s. She had a gentle twinkle in her eye and was generous with her time and warmth.

During rare family gatherings, my father would approach her first, enveloping her fragile frame in a hug, as she remained seated with her sharp mind and charm intact. After their heartfelt exchange, he would summon me, as if I was granted an audience with royalty.

Her affection for my father, her sister's son, extended to his children. With steel-blue eyes and an engaging presence, she drew people into her sphere with warmth and inviting dialogue.

Benevolence nurtures and uplifts, while cruelty can stifle and oppress. Unfortunately, some individuals wield power through intimidation, perhaps stemming from their own childhood wounds. I strive to perceive them as injured beings deserving of compassion.

Yet, there are also wise elders who cherish the youth, viewing them as uncut gems, deserving of unconditional love. So, here’s to both the powerful and the benevolent, as they help us refine our lives by shedding the unnecessary.

The essence of what truly matters should be spiritually enriching, enhancing our hearts and souls. Those who drain our spirits can be more swiftly removed from our lives.

Before Cutting

Embracing Minimalism and Spiritual Clarity

It’s essential to address those who take you for granted and cross boundaries. You never know who might be oblivious and could benefit from a gentle reminder. This could lead to significant growth in the other person, fostering a deeper connection.

My mother often proclaimed, “How dare you!” standing firm for her rights. Her fierce spirit remains a core part of my identity—a legacy of resilience.

Sometimes, the skeletal remains of our family histories serve as the only muse we need for creativity and inspiration. The memories of those who possessed integrity and virtue provide a continuous source of wisdom and nourishment for the soul.

Indeed, cutting to the bone is a necessary journey for clarity.

Chapter 2: Lessons from the Past

This video illustrates the art of cutting bone in prime rib steaks, showcasing techniques that enhance both skill and appreciation for the craft.
