A friend of mine recently suggested a book by Betsy Murphy titled “Write On: A Daily Practice for Anyone with a Story.” This book features 365 writing prompts. The initial prompt references kintsugi, a Japanese art that utilizes gold to mend broken pottery, transforming imperfections into a unique narrative of beauty and history.

She encouraged us to reflect and write about something we’ve shattered. This prompted me to consider my own experiences. Although nothing specific came to mind at first, a multitude of thoughts soon emerged. I recognized my knack for breaking, dismantling, and deconstructing various aspects of life. Perfection, I realized, is a misleading representation of reality. There's no such thing as a flawless marriage, job, parent, or home.

The real charm lies in our flaws, and it's high time we embrace that truth. Sometimes, disruption is essential to spark transformation and adopt a fresh perspective.

I perceive breaking as a necessary agent of change, yet it’s vital to understand that some things are too fragile; once they are damaged, they may be beyond repair. This is where discernment becomes crucial.

Section 1.1: Challenging the Rules

I’ve come to understand that I’ve often challenged various rules. Adhering strictly to every guideline would reduce us to mere automata, mindlessly following orders. As a species, we possess greater complexity.

We should strive to grasp the essence of rules and the intentions behind them. It’s essential to question the relevance of these rules before making decisions.

I am not endorsing lawlessness or disrespect for regulations; some rules are indeed necessary for maintaining order and promoting harmony. However, when applied improperly, rules can hinder progress and lead to misuse. What benefit is there in that?

In this video, Rob Stein discusses how to assertively say "no" to societal pressures and conventions, empowering viewers to embrace their individuality.

Section 1.2: Breaking Out of Comfort Zones

Imagine spending your entire life in the same location—be it a house, village, or city. Such a life would lack the richness that comes from experiencing the world's beauty and complexity. It might also breed intolerance towards those who are different from us, stunting our growth and making us averse to change.

I relish change and all it entails—the thrill, excitement, and vitality it brings. I have traveled and lived in various places, each encounter enriching my understanding of diverse cultures, cuisines, and experiences. These interactions taught me lessons I would have missed had I remained in one spot.

Chapter 2: Breaking Stereotypes

This video delves into the necessity of breaking stereotypes and fostering social change, urging viewers to challenge preconceived notions.

During my teenage years, I visited Bendi Bazar in Byculla, Mumbai—a neighborhood often labeled as low-income and marginalized. The Muslim community there faces significant discrimination due to outdated beliefs and stereotypes. However, a college friend welcomed me into her home, and I was initially filled with trepidation, influenced by preconceived notions.

Yet, my experience was enlightening—her family lived a life not unlike mine, characterized by love and warmth. Stereotypes may cloud our vision, but they cannot erase our capacity for connection and empathy.

Section 2.1: Breaking Mindsets

I had another memorable experience around the same age in a luxurious apartment in Thane, close to my own home. The residents were perceived as the “cool kids,” and their stunning home, complete with a staircase, left me in awe.

This encounter ignited a dream within me—an aspiration for a beautiful home of my own one day. Even as a young teen, I was driven to pursue my dreams. Such experiences fueled my ambition and motivated me to work towards my goals.

What struck me most about that family was their calmness amidst life’s pressures. I observed them engaged in their individual pursuits, a refreshing sight that made me realize that love and togetherness don’t always require constant interaction. Relationships can flourish in moments of both connection and solitude, allowing us to explore our passions.

In conclusion, while we often view breaking as a negative act, it can lead to positive transformation. I encourage you to reflect on what barriers you wish to dismantle in the coming year of 2024.
