Embrace Satisfaction: A 13-Month Journey to Your Best Life
Written on
Chapter 1: The Turning Point
In life, there comes a moment when you must choose between continuing the search for something greater or accepting your current situation.
I watched my father laboriously skim the pool in our backyard, pulling out leaves and debris from the storm that had passed. He stood tall at 6'2", bald and robust, embodying a playful spirit. A jokester and protector, he is the epitome of goodness, a trait he inherited from my late grandmother, who was a force of nature.
While I often delve into profound conversations, he prefers to keep things lighthearted. But when he occasionally ventures into serious discussions, it feels significant.
“I refuse to settle. I deserve more,” I declared, almost as if the words flowed through me rather than from my lips. In that moment, I was in the midst of leaving a toxic job without any backup plan, preparing to travel across Europe and start my own online venture.
My experience studying abroad in Florence, Italy, had awakened a part of me I never knew existed. I embraced healthier living, pursued my curiosities, and fostered a mindset that encouraged exploration. I recognized that if I were to abandon the security I had, I needed to immerse myself in an environment that sparked my passion for life and allowed me to become my best self.
Truth be told, I felt suffocated in my existence. I was merely surviving, and that was becoming increasingly unbearable.
I wondered if my dad sensed my struggle. As the family member who had followed the conventional route—graduating high school, attaining a degree, and securing a job—my sudden shift away from this path may have stirred something within him.
For the first time, he expressed pride in my choices. “I admire your bravery. I’ve always played it safe, following the lessons my father taught me, but I haven’t always lived the life I truly wanted.”
While he enjoys a fulfilling life, his admission to me marked the beginning of peeling away the layers of his guardedness.
Many people find themselves settling, becoming complacent, and wishing for change while merely going through the motions. They grapple with their aspirations and their gratitude for what they have, often feeling conflicted.
You can appreciate what you possess while still feeling unfulfilled. Acknowledging this doesn’t make you selfish.
Now, nearly five years later, I’m beginning to grasp the significance of satisfaction in my life. I can celebrate what I have (gratitude), aspire for what I want (vision), and appreciate the journey to get there (process). Enhancing my daily experiences can amplify my overall satisfaction.
Even if your life feels perfect as is, consider ways to make it even slightly more fulfilling; you might be surprised by the results.
From a young age, I understood that settling was not an option for me. It suggested defeat or a willingness to accept less out of fear. Ultimately, settling breeds unhappiness and fosters resentment in every aspect of life.
I’ve witnessed many individuals let their dreams wither or remain trapped in a cycle of numbness, moving only because they feel obligated to do so.
It pains me to see this happen, as I believe we all deserve better.
Fully embracing life and cultivating joy requires intentional and systemic satisfaction. It involves understanding what brings us joy and consciously integrating more of it into our lives until it becomes second nature.
This means awakening our senses, recognizing what we want to savor, making time for it, and keeping it simple. It’s about choosing to be playful rather than serious all the time and shedding the burdens we carry.
I’m aware that this journey holds much more, and I’m eager to delve into it.
I’m embarking on a 13-month exploration of what truly satisfies me, aiming to shed the weight I’ve unknowingly accumulated while merely “going through the motions” of life.
To that, I declare, “No more.”
I’ll be sharing regular updates on this quest for satisfaction, anchored in 13 themes I plan to embody as I transform into my next-level self.
This journey is about soulful exploration without expectations, documenting moments of courage and curiosity, and stepping into the role of the main character in my own life story, all while embracing pleasure.
I invite you to join me on this adventure—feel free to comment and share if you resonate with my journey or know someone who might benefit.
