# Choosing Kindness: My Journey to Veganism and Activism

Chapter 1: The Awakening
My aversion to violence was the catalyst for my transition to veganism.
As an activist, I frequently write about veganism and animal rights on my blog. I aim to clarify that my reflections on choosing a vegan lifestyle are not meant to judge others; rather, I share my own journey, understanding that it may not resonate with everyone.
Since childhood, my affection for animals has coexisted with my disdain for violence. This awareness intensified significantly after I publicly came out in 1991. Suddenly, I found myself acutely aware of violence—both the threats and the derogatory remarks directed at me as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
Over time, my perception of violence began to expand. I realized that the violence I had previously overlooked was present on my plate. My deep-rooted love for animals began to conflict with my dietary choices.
Even prior to my vegan journey, I would often declare my love for animals, though I primarily meant dogs. Like many, I never intended to inflict harm on animals; I wouldn’t consciously seek to cause them pain. Yet, I was complicit, paying others to do so on my behalf.
During a gathering with fellow activists after a human rights protest, one colleague, who identified as vegan, gently expressed surprise that someone as compassionate as I could still consume animal products. Their kind words resonated with me, planting a seed of reflection.
I cherished animals and didn’t want to contribute to their suffering. It took years for me to embrace a vegan lifestyle, but that conversation sparked my awareness of the harsh realities faced by animals destined for our plates. I had never considered the torment and fear animals endure before their lives are taken.
Now, after 28 years of being vegan, my journey began by confronting the violence on my plate. The positive effects have extended beyond merely avoiding animal harm; my health and fitness have significantly improved. As I age, I find myself gravitating towards less processed foods and reducing sugar intake, which has further enhanced my well-being.
Moreover, I no longer support the individuals who harm animals for profit. Many of these workers, often immigrants, face dire circumstances, losing their jobs and lacking health insurance if injured on the job.
The interconnectedness of equality, liberation, animal rights, and human rights defines my identity, and my veganism plays a crucial role in this intersection.
Being vegan is straightforward and incredibly satisfying. It benefits both my health and the animals. After all, we cherish animals and stand against violence.
Take a chance. Offer your support. Be kind to your friends and community.

Chapter 2: Embracing Compassion
The video "Choose My Plate: A Lyrical Rendition" creatively illustrates the importance of mindful eating and making compassionate food choices. It emphasizes how our plates can reflect our values and the changes we wish to see in the world.
In "THE POISON ON YOUR PLATE! Unbelievable Food Facts with @krishashok," we explore astonishing truths about the food industry, shedding light on why our dietary choices matter not just for our health, but for the well-being of animals and society as a whole.
